Savannah's Feminist Book Club

Thursday, June 13th

19:30 – 22:00, event starts at 20:00

The third series of Savannah Bay’s Feminist Book Club concludes with a challenging, dystopian choice: N.K. Jemisin’s Fifth Season

From February to June, Savannah’s Feminist Book Club will read and discuss five dystopian and utopian visions, each focused on the power of personal choice and collective religious narrative. This series’ lineup includes three people of color and one queer author. The bookclub is not a four-month-long commitment, feel free to join any month you like. There will be snacks and drinks available. The event is free if you buy the book at our shop; otherwise, we ask a contribution of €6.

After exploring more pointedly feminist works throughout its series, the topics and decisions of N.K. Jemisin’s 2015 Hugo Award-winning novel will be readily apparent. While the novel initially appears dense and inscrutable, its cosmology is ultimately simple: the Earth is hellishly broken so that devastating climate change (worst being the “fifth season”) keeps mankind on a perpetual back foot of survival. Their only hope lies in “orogenes” (mutants with the genetic ability to commune with literal earth/dirt), who are faered and brutually subjugated. We get an ambiguous epic split between three POVs of this post-apocalypse that clicks into place near the end for a satisfying tale of the rebellion and self-care necessary to survive under fascism.

Please join us for an expansive conversation and treats on Thursday, June 13.

Price of the book is €14,95. If you want to order the book from us, please make sure to do so on time.
